O'Grady grew up in Wheaton, Illinois and graduated from the North High School of Wheaton in the year 1981. She is the daughter of Jan O'Grady (a finance planner) as well as Jim O'Grady. Her family raised her by their grandparents in Wheaton in Illinois and graduated in 1981 with a degree from Wheaton-North High School. She appeared in some commercials prior to her move from Wheaton, Illinois to Los Angeles. Her first assignment was as a model in the company of Montgomery Ward. She also featured in a variety of commercials. She played a role in the romantic comedy She's Having a Baby and was later cast as a recurring role in the ABC comedy China Beach, opposite Dana Delany. Other guest appearances include shows for television as well as independent films, among several others. Her debut role on television was in the role of Donna Abandando on the ABC Police show NYPD Blue. O'Grady was the team's big-haired secretary of ABC's NYPD Blue between 1993 through in 1996. Each year, she earned Emmy Award nods for Outstanding actress in the Drama Series. With her fellow cast members, she won an award, the Screen Actors Guild Award, for the Best Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.
