O'Neil was in high school when she auditioned in 2005 to be a part of the third Canadian Idol season. She made it to the top 100 rounds following the judges' praise for her vocal ability. O'Neil was given high praise by the judges. However, she experienced major losses during the Top 10 weeks and Top 9 of the Finals in which she was relegated into the bottom 3 and bottom 2 in both cases. The judges were shocked by the results and encouraged the audience to support contestants with strong singing talents such as Melissa. O'Neil's performances were such awe-inspiring that she didn't even make it to the third place again. Her two additional performances on September 7, 2005, when O'Neil advanced to the final two in the competition's contest, Werner predicted that the morning the newspapers would be reporting O'Neil's triumph over Rex Goudie as she became the 3rd Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil received a rousing ovation from Canadian Premier Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
